Songs to Remember Measurement Conversions!

My kids were, uh... ACTIVE this week! Even though measurement is a pretty interactive math unit, I still tried to spice it up by adding a few of my own activities. Since the charts weren't too pretty, I typed them up for you!

We sang a few verses of a measurement song to the tune of Bingo to remember some of the most important conversions between units of length (standard and metric). You can see the first one below! I'm hoping the song helps the units really stick!

 I also included a song about units for measuring capacity. I still have a hard time remembering these sometimes! Gallon Man (or Mr. Gallon, Gallon Guy/ Gal, or Super Gallon Man, or Gallon Robot) is a terrific way to teach these units once the students have had a chance to measure for themselves, and this song lends itself perfectly to singing along with a Gallon Man!

I have been trying to fit in words to "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" for years- but I finally tried out a new tune, and "Dry Bones" works much better!

My kids have loved coming up with motions, singing with different dynamics, and performing our song for other classes. I hope your class will enjoy it, too!

Fifty Followers Freebie- Easter/ Spring Measurement!

I planned on getting a freebie out as soon as I hit 50 followers- and then you all made it happen much faster than I expected! I've only been really working on this blog for about a week and a half, so thank you SO much to those who are following me, pinning ideas, and commenting with encouragement!

If you've been in lately, you've probably seen plastic eggs filled with little plastic rabbits that can "jump." There are 15 bunnies in each egg, so I was able to get enough for my class for $2. Honestly, considering I'm having them work in partners, I could have just bought one.

My class is just starting measurement. Even though we're not officially doing the Common Core standards until next year, I went ahead and looked up Common Core Math for 2nd grade to create this. While of course this covers a few standards, I really focused on one in particular.

2.MD.2 - Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

This sounds like a tricky one, to be sure. My students will be making the rabbits hop and then measuring the distance in both inches and centimeters.

I'm going to have them analyze their own data with a partner, and then we'll discuss it together to look for patterns and speculate why we might have found those patterns.
